I just wanted to chime in here on this site. I am a first time car insurance buyer…I am 18 and have found it extremely difficult to get any yearly rates under $1,000. I was hoping I could at least find liability only insurance coverage for less than that a year. Can you assist me? Doug

Hey Doug, I am afraid your age has gotten the worst of you. you can try to get a high deductible full coverage policy which might have a $1,000 deductible or you will have to keep shopping for smaller carriers that are offering just liability insurance only. I can suggest you use the form on this site and see if Travelers is available in your area, which they should be. You might also want to try The General, which is also available from this site using the form above. It just takes persistence and a few more years of a perfect driving record to get low rates I am afraid.  I can offer more suggestions for first time car insurance below.

1. Raise your deductible

2. ask for a discount, good student, credit union or fraternal organizations,  bank members ,military etc.

3. Combine other coverage, like home and auto together

4. Clean up your credit score if you can , its used to determine your payment risk…and premium amount

5. Continue to shop around for first time car insurance, there are a lot of small carriers that are available if you search hard enough
